The Tarkine, a pristine wilderness in Tasmania, is a place of wonder and mystery, where ancient trees stand tall and freshwater crayfish lurk in the shadows. But it's the fungi that truly captivate the imagination. As a mycologist, I was thrilled to embark on a three-day fungi workshop in this breathtaking landscape, led by the brilliant Dr. Alison Pouliot. What made this experience truly special was the opportunity to explore the vital role fungi play in ecosystems and their potential for environmental restoration. The workshop brought together a diverse group of experts, from toxicologists to botanists, all united by a shared sense of awe for the fungal kingdom. We listened to Sylvia Plath's poem, took sporeprints, and examined the fascinating ways language shapes our perception of fungi. But the real magic happened during our foraging trips. We ventured through the rainforest, following the Pieman River and marveling at the ancient Huon pines. With each step, we discovered a new species of fungi, from delicate blue pixie's parasols to giant bracket fungi the size of dinner plates. The diversity was astonishing, and we often covered less than 200 meters an hour. What's more, we realized that much of the fungal life remains invisible below ground, meaning there's still so much to discover. This experience left me with a newfound appreciation for the fungal kingdom and a sense of urgency to protect and value these vital organisms. As Plath wrote, 'We shall by morning/ Inherit the earth/ Our foot's in the door.' It's up to us to ensure that the door is open for the fungi, and for the countless ecosystems they support.
